Most of the divine services and worships practiced in Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church use Geez, an ancient language of Ethiopia. Ethiopic or Geez Fidel is a unique Ethiopian character that most Ethiopian languages use. Hence teaching our children how to read and write Geez letters primarily enables them to fully understand these divine church services. Moreover the language study helps children and youth to become ordained deacons and serve our church in the future.
A child as a member of the community has the right to enjoy his or her own culture, to profess and practice his or her own religion, or to use his or her own language. One of our church services is geared towards encouraging and supporting Christian children to learn their native language and culture so that they maintain their identity and benefit from bilingualism. Speaking the native language helps the kids to value their culture and heritage, maintain the links with the family and other community members. Scientific studies confirmed that students who learn English and continue to develop their native language have higher academic achievement in later years than do students who learn English at the expense of their first language.
Please bring your children and let them learn their own language!
